What is Male Infertility in Ayurveda?
Male infertility is the inability of a man to produce healthy sperm to cause pregnancy in a fertile female partner. Infertility in men may be due to low sperm count or unhealthy semen or low motility in sperm or all of these. Some men will not be able to produce sperms. Male infertility is more prevalent than most couples imagine.
Texts of Ayurveda give more importance to treat infertility so that men and women are healthy and fertile. Healthy and fertile couples give birth to healthy and normal children who will become pillars of a healthy society.
The Indian medical science Ayurveda explains ayurvedic treatments and home remedies for male infertility in its chapter called ":Vajikarana Adhyaya". In this chapter, they clearly mention herbs, lifestyles, and diets to improve the quality and quantity of sperm. Based on the principles of Ayurveda, shukra dhatu helps in the production of semen. Nourishing of shukra dhatu leads to the production of healthy and motile sperms.

Consume Fresh Fruits and vegetables:
Consume more fresh fruits and vegetables like
watermelon
banana,
pomegranate
carrots etc

Avoid occurrence of erectile dysfunction:
Sexual dysfunction or erectile dysfunction may hinder the process of delivery of sperms into the vagina. Treat this condition as early as possible.

Testicles hang outside the body to facilitate sperm production in comparatively low temperatures than that of the body. Production of sperms gets arrested when the temperature of testicles increases. This may happen due to keeping the laptop on lap, wearing tight jeans or inner wares, keeping a cell phone in front pant pockets, sitting for a long time in hot saunas, exposure to high temperatures in the workplace, etc. Always keep laptops and cell phones away from your body. Wear comfortable clothes which are not too tight. Dip testicles in a mug of cold water twice daily.
Quit Smoking or use of tobacco and alcohol:
Tobacco in any form is harmful to sperm production. Quit tobacco, alcohol and cultivate healthy habits.
Avoid Gaining Weight:
Always maintain a healthy weight. Various researches have shown that obesity may cause low sperm count and low sperm motility.
Ayurvedic treatment methods to reduce body weight and increase sperm count:
The cause has to be addressed first. Avoid foods that increase Kapha dosha. Sweets, fats, refined and processed foods, fast foods, etc vitiate kapha dosha. Exercise well to balance all vitiated factors. Eat foods that are lite to digest and increase metabolism. Avoid sleeping in the daytime. Increase physical activity. Consume herbs that act as fat fighters and sperm boosters.
Keep Stress at bay:
Stress accelerates the aging process causing dhatu kshaya. Thus process impacts shukra dhatu and affects healthy sperm production and lowers sperm count and motility. Keep stress at bay with meditation, pranayama, or deep breathing and regular exercises.
Yoga and pranayama are of great help to reduce stress and they also boost the secretion of happy hormones which increase the effectiveness of testosterone.
Avoid repeated ejaculations:
Repeated ejaculations without gap, either through intercourse or through masturbation causes shukra dhatu kshaya or decrease of shukra dhatu quality. This leads to low sperm count and motility.
Overcoming low sperm count by preventing overheating of testicles-
Wear comfortable supportive cotton undergarments.
Wear pants that are loose at the crotch and do not push testicles inside the body.
Never sit in a hot steam bath or saunas for a long time. If you are sitting in a steam bath chamber place a wet cotton cloth on your scrotum.
Protect the scrotum with proper heat-resisting pants when you work in a hot climate or near furnaces.
Avoid keeping laptops on laps for long hours. Keep them on lap only when it is inevitable.
If you are willing to enjoy a tub bath, fill it with lukewarm water. By no means use hot water tubs.
Never sit for long hours on a chair. Make it a habit to get up from the chair once in 30 minutes and walk around for 5 minutes to push the heat out of the testicular region. This also helps to increase blood circulation.
Kapha and medhas, which aid the normal function of testicles, get vitiated due to overheating. This leads to a reduction in sperm production causing low sperm count in men. According to texts of Ayurveda dipping scrotum in a mug of cold water,( which is at room temperature) for few minutes helps to normalize kapha and medhas by reducing the temperature of testicles. This increases sperm production. The process can be repeated a number of times whenever you feel the heat in the testicular region. Another method to cool testicles is a thin soft cotton cloth that has to be dipped in cold water and is placed on the genital area for 3 minutes.
With these methods, one can prevent overheating of testicles and overcome low sperm count.
Exercise Regularly:
Regular exercises are very important to improve blood circulation and boost sperm count. A simple brisk walk for 45 minutes daily is the best exercise.
